audience1Chicago theater patrons have panned Redmoon Theater’s latest production “terribly lacking in unoriginality,” according to reports.

Redmoon’s “Winter Pageant 2009” drew recent criticism from local theatergoers wanting more familiarity for their ticket price.

“I mean, I didn’t see anything I already knew,” said Bill Edds, a 55-year-old theater patron from Lake Forest. “Where was Uncle Fester? Billy Elliot? Where was Young Frankenstein? Uh, I mean Fraaahn-kenstein. Ha ha. See? I’m already laughing!”

“Some idiot at the hotel concierge desk told me to come see this thing with my kids,” remarked a disgruntled Susan Zawoski, a 45-year-old mother of four from St. Louis. “Two minutes into it, my little Carson was asking me ‘where the Legally Blonde is?’ I had to give him a video game to keep him from being bored to death.”

Critics in the media have also lashed out at Redmoon’s audacious decision to produce a challenging original piece instead of the far more artistically-satisfying and audience-pleasing retreads.

“What was Redmoon thinking?” wrote SunTimes critic Hedy Weis. “The best way to perform a musical is with a songbook already familiar to an audience. I want to hear a song I can also hear on an oldies radio station. Also, it is imperative that each actor holds a microphone and sings popular songs. That way, the audience knows it’s not just a boring musical, but a concert as well!”

Redmoon Theater Artistic Director Frank Maugeri already seems to be regretting his outrageous decision.
“We weren’t thinking clearly. Originality in theater is SO 1965 and we needed to change with the times,” he said. “In 2010, we plan on doing a musical based on the TV show ‘Three’s Company’ with songs entirely from the Jim Morrison catalog. It’ll be called ‘Come and Knock on our Doors”.
